As it is written.

It was a cold day, snow falling,  I was 8 1/2 months pregnant. I had just lost my dad. I remember going into our laundry room and shutting the door and crying into a pile of clothes so no one else could hear me. I remember that same day I wanted to just crawl in a hole and not be seen for days. Not a good place to be in but for me that is how I felt. Until, that same day I walked out my door in to the snow and went to get the mail. Not thinking really about much of anything I see a envelope with my name on it. It wasn't a card it was a handwritten letter from a friend.

As I read the letter I can remember thinking, what a great friend, she took the time out of her busy life to sit down with a pen and paper simply to tell me she was thinking about me and praying for me. It was simple. It was meaningful. It was perfect. For me, it was what I needed on that very day.

Which brings me to a question for you and myself. When was the last time you wrote a real letter? Nothing typed on a computer or sent via text. A pen to the paper letter. There is just something about receiving something tangible to remind someone else that they are thought of and loved.

I am challenging myself and you to take 10 minutes out of your week. Make a list of people who are on your heart. Sit down and simply write. It doesn't have to be earth shattering, just intentional.  Mail them out. Sign. Sealed. Delivered. Sometimes that is the hardest thing to follow through with.

Who can you write a card to today? Will you do it? I hope so, what an easy way to simply bless someone else!

  1. Great post! I love getting hand written mail! It's so fun to see an envelope among bills and junk mail. My mom always made this a big priority when I was growing up....she was always sending notes to people. I buy cards and cute notecards all the time to ensure that I always have a good stash when I feel like sending someone a note. I try to think of a couple of people each month to send notes to, then write myself a reminder on my calendar each week or every other week to send one out. Happy note writing!

  2. What a nice idea! I love getting mail (not so much bills) and I love writing letters. I am very guilty of writing letters to people and then not sending them out. I love to write. I love to share my thoughts on paper, but I am awful at following through. I am going to take you up on this and write some letters this weekend! :)

  3. Jenny- I LOVE your idea of writing the names on the calendar. What a great reminder. I am going to start doing that!

Jody- YAH! I have written a ton of letters and have NEVER sent them out! I am so bad at that! I am hoping to get better! So glad you are taking me up on this and writing! There will be some very happy people in the next couple of days when they find a letter from YOU in their mailbox!

  4. I love this idea. When my husband and I were first dating we used to send letters to each other all the time even though we lived in the same city. It was very sweet!! Nothing is more personal and shows that you care than a real hand written letter....I will definately take up this challenge!
